World Democracy Status Report 2023 Now Availablee

The Observatory of Democracy and Political Representation is pleased to announce that the World Democracy Status Report 2023 (only in Portuguese) is now available on our website. This report offers a comprehensive synthesis of the main global democracy reports, including the Democracy Report 2023, the Global State of Democracy 2023, and the Democracy Index 2022. Additionally, it provides a specific focus on Portugal, Southern Europe, and the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP).

The 2023 Democracy Report presents itself as a synthesis of four other reports on the same topic, specifically aimed at higher education students and the general public interested in the state of democracy. Its reading offers a simple yet useful overview of the state of democracy worldwide. However, this report does not aim to replace the reports it summarizes but rather to serve as a guide or introduction to them. Therefore, we recommend consulting the original reports for a more in-depth understanding.

The 2023 Democracy Report not only provides a summary and analysis of each of these reports individually but also compares them with each other. What are the aspects in which they differ? Do they present a more exhaustive methodology or opt for simplification? What consequences does this have on how they evaluate democracy? These are some of the questions that guided the development of this report, always with the aim of informing Portuguese-speaking readers about the various ways of evaluating democracy and the specific perception of its state in regions closely linked to Portugal by historical, geographical, and cultural ties.
