In tribute to Professor André Freire, ODRP is making available the database from the Survey of Candidates for Parliament in the 2024 Legislative Elections (both elected and non-elected).

The Observatory of Democracy and Political Representation (ODRP) is making available, as of October 30, the database from the Survey of Candidates for Parliament in the 2024 Legislative Elections (both elected and non-elected).
The choice of date honors the legacy of Professor André Freire, Full Professor at Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon and one of the main contributors to previous editions of the survey (2008, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2022, and 2024), whose passing marks one year on this date. André Freire left a significant legacy in Portuguese Political Science, especially in studies on elites and political representation.
Aimed at studying the process of candidate selection for legislative elections by political parties, as well as the profile of candidates and members of parliament and their political and social attitudes and behaviors, the survey resulted in a database with nearly 250 variables. It is worth noting that the implementation of this survey faced several challenges, including the death of the lead researcher and the holding of a new, early legislative election in May 2025. Nevertheless, the study obtained 140 valid responses, 68 from elected deputies and 72 from non-elected candidates, representing 7.6% of the total number of candidates in that election.

Soon, the 2024 edition of the candidate survey will be integrated into the CCS – Comparative Candidates Survey, enabling comparative analysis of the political representation process across a set of advanced democracies. A special edition of the Joint Database, including all editions of the Survey of Candidates for Parliament conducted in Portugal to date (2008–2024), is currently being prepared for publication on the website of the Observatory of Democracy and Political Representation.
