Resonances and Public Sociology: A sociological essay on Portuguese society
On Monday, February 5, 2024, at 6pm, the Observatory of Democracy and Political Representation will host Professor Elísio Estanque for the launch of his book “Resonances and Public Sociology: A sociological essay on Portuguese society”, with comments from Professors Guya Accornero (CIES-Iscte) and Paulo Pedroso (CIES-Iscte) and Francisco Assis, President of the Conselho Económico Social (CES) .
Considered a fundamental book for understanding the present time, based on critical sociology, “Resonances and Public Sociology: Sociological Essays on Portuguese Society” is a collection of essays and opinion pieces dealing with the great dilemmas of our time, including work and social classes, youth cultures, inequalities and social movements.
Divided into two parts, in the first Elísio Estanque brings together a subset of more theoretical texts, where he presents his vision of sociology as both analytical and socially and politically committed, covering the key themes of his research. The second part brings together a series of texts published in the press on important contemporary issues, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, among others.
A graduate of Iscte – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, Elísio Estanque is a sociologist, retired professor at the Faculty of Economics and researcher at the Center for Social Studies (CES) at the University of Coimbra, where he received his doctorate in 1999. Among others, he is the author of “Re-Trabalhando as Classes no Diálogo Norte-Sul” (in press), “Praxe e Tradições Académicas”, “Classe Média e Lutas Sociais” and “A Classe Média: Ascensão e Declínio”.
