Democratic Quality in Southern Europe, edited by Tiago Fernades, analyzes the democratic trajectories of France, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain over the last 50 years, based on data from the Varieties of Democracy project.

By combining new data with classic methodologies to create new hypotheses about the development, quality and depth of democracy in the region, the book covers the protest movements from the late 1960s and 1970s to the Great Recession, going beyond the impact of socio-economic development and exploring innovative explanations for the different paths adopted by each country.

Democratic Quality in Southern Europe features articles by ago Fernandes, Rui Branco, João Cancela, Edna Costa, Pedro Diniz de Sousa, Pedro T. Magalhães, Edalina Rodrigues Sanches, José Santana-Pereira, Tiago Tibúrcio and is published by the University of Notre Dame Press and is available for purchase at https://undpress.nd.edu/9780268207755/democratic-quality-in-southern-europe/.
