Democracy Report 2025: 25 Years of Autocratization

The Portuguese edition of the Democracy Report 2025: 25 Years of Autocratization – Democracy Trumped? is now available. The publication is part of the international Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) project, with the Portuguese edition produced through a joint initiative of the V-Dem Regional Centre for Southern Europe and the Centre for International Studies at Iscte (CEI-Iscte).

This second Portuguese-language edition examines global trends in democratization and autocratization, paying particular attention to the political and social transformations experienced by Portuguese-speaking countries over recent decades.

For the first time, the report includes an entire section dedicated to the Lusophone world, featuring 17 original articles exploring different political and institutional trajectories. Its historical scope extends from Portugal’s Carnation Revolution of 25 April 1974 to Timor-Leste’s democratic transition in the 2000s.

By examining these diverse political experiences, the publication seeks to contribute to a comparative understanding of the progress, challenges and inequalities that have shaped democratic development across Portuguese-speaking countries, placing these developments within the broader international trends identified by V-Dem.
