The Portuguese Candidate Survey to the 2024 Legislative Elections (elected and non-elected)

The Observatory of Democracy and Political Representation will make available, starting October 30, 2025, the database of the Survey of Candidates for Members of Parliament in the 2024 Legislative Elections (both elected and non-elected).

The choice of this date honors the legacy of Professor André Freire, Full Professor at Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon and one of the main contributors to previous editions of the survey (2008, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2022, and 2024), whose passing marks one year on this date. André Freire left a significant legacy in Portuguese Political Science, especially in studies on elites and political representation.

Aiming to study the process of candidate selection for legislative elections by political parties, as well as the characterization of candidates and members of parliament and their political-social behaviors and attitudes, the survey resulted in the construction of a database with nearly 250 variables. It is worth noting that conducting this survey faced several challenges, including the death of the lead researcher and the occurrence of a new, early legislative election in May 2025. Nevertheless, the study obtained 140 valid responses, 68 from elected deputies and 72 from non-elected candidates, representing 7.6% of the total candidates in that election.
