Professor and researcher Tiago Carvalho (CIES-Iscte) was one of the winners of the 1st edition of the João Ferreira de Almeida Prize, with his book Contesting Austerity: Social Movements and the Left in Portugal and Spain (2008-2015) (Amsterdam University Press, 2022) winning in the Books category. In the same category, the book “Investigação Sociológica em Portugal: Um Guia Histórico e Analítico” (Sociological Research in Portugal: A Historical and Analytical Guide) (Edições Afrontamento, 2022), by Fernando Luís Machado (CIES-Iscte), was also honored, while CIES-Iscte researchers Renato Miguel do Carmo and Maria Madalena d’Avelar were awarded in the scientific article category for their publication The weight of time and the unemployment experience: daily life and future prospects (Current Sociology, vol. 69(5), 2021).
Established in 2023 by Iscte – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, the prize honors professor and researcher João Ferreira de Almeida and aims to award two books and two articles in sociology, authored individually or collectively, every two years. The prize also involves the Portuguese Sociology Association (APS), of which João Ferreira de Almeida was member no. 1 and its first President.
