Under the scope of the Observatory for Democracy and Political Representation (ODRP) and with the support of CIES-Iscte, André Freire’s new book “Left and Right. Meaning and Correlates in Long Consolidated and New Democracies”, Moldova, Eliva Press 2022, will be launched and discussed at Iscte – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa on May 23rd, 2022 by Pedro Mexia, commentator in several media organs, and Margarida Davim, journalist specialized in political affairs for Sábado magazine. The opening address will be held by Professor Teresa Patrício, director of CIES-Iscte, and moderated by Viriato Queiroga, member of the ODRP.

Based on articles previously published in indexed international academic journals and book chapters in international publications, the book is divided into four topics, including: Left and Right in consolidated and new democracies (five chapters); the meanings and social correlates of the Left and Right (three chapters); Left and Right in Portugal, voters and parties (two chapters); and the Portuguese case study on Left and Right between citizens and representatives (two chapters).   

André Freire is Full Professor in Political Science, Director of the PhD in Political Science at the Iscte-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, Senior Researcher at CIES-Iscte, and Director of the Observatory of Democracy and Political Representation. He has published over 30 books and over 100 articles, in several national and international publishing houses and academic journals, being an important reference in the study of ideology (Left-Right), notably at the level of elites and masses, electoral behavior and political attitudes of citizens and elected officials, institutions and political reforms, and in political representation.
