Launch in Lisbon of the book “Da Geringonça à Maioria Absoluta. A situação política em Portugal e na Europa”
On Thursday 21 December 2023 at 6pm, this time in the city of Lisboa, André Freire, professor and political scientist, will hold another launch session for his new book “Da Geringonça à Maioria Absoluta. A situação política em Portugal e na Europa” published by Gato Bravo. The event will take place at the Linha de Sombra bookshop and will feature Margarida Balseiro Lopes, jurist and politician, Catarina Martins, actress and politician, and Daniel Adrião, ex-journalist and politician.
“Da Geringonça à Maioria Absoluta – A situação política em Portugal e na Europa” brings together chronicles published in Jornal de Letras, 2017-2022, Público, 2022-2023, Seara Nova, and the Vaca Voadora blog. The general aim of the book is to help the reader understand Portugal and its political framework today, through a mix of comparative political science approaches and a citizen’s approach that is sufficiently analytical to appeal to and interest people from various political backgrounds.
The book is divided into six main themes: in part I, Portuguese governance since Geringonça (2015-2019); part II, the positions of the right in the face of left-wing alliances; part III “blinkered government” (2019-2022); part IV, the period of absolute majority (2022-2023); in part V, themes and debates in European and international politics; in part VI, cultural writings with political resonances.
André Freire is a Full Professor of Political Science, Director of the PhD programme in Political Science, Senior Researcher at CIES-Iscte and Director of the Observatory of Democracy and Political Representation at CIES-Iscte. He was a regular columnist for the newspaper Público from March 2006 to January 2016, and for Jornal de Letras from May 2017 to April 2022.
