Call for papers: Social Movements Research Network Pre-Conference

The Council for European Studies (CES) is calling for abstracts for the Social Movements Research Network Pre-Conference, themed “Researching social movements: methodological, ethical and political challenges”, which will be held on July 1-2, 2024, in Lyon, France. Submissions should be sent by January 15 to SMRNCES@gmail.com and luisa.rossini@ics.ulisboa.pt.

This pre-conference invites contributions that, but not only, address the methodological, ethical and political challenges of doing research on the dynamics of collective action, both theoretical and empirical. The pre-conference proposes a critical reflection on how research is done on/with social movements, also seeking self-reflective accounts of how researchers have dealt with these challenges in the course of their work.

The pre-conference is divided into three main topics related to the study of social movements and collective action: “A methodological challenge: studying a broad and diverse field”, “An ethical challenge: negotiating the researcher’s role in value-laden and polarized environments”; “A political challenge: doing research with/for social movements”.

Abstracts should be in English, with a maximum of 500 words, including the status and affiliation of all authors. The decision on the acceptance of proposals will be made on March 1, 2024 and the submission of the full paper by June 1, 2024.
