SUMMARY:Ideological polarization among federal deputies in Brazil (2005-2021)
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday (11/01/2024), at 2:30 p.m., in the Paquete Oliveira auditorium of Iscte – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, the Observatory of Democracy and Political Representation will host Julian Borba, professor at the  Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), for the conference “Ideological polarization among federal deputies in Brazil (2005-2021)”.\nTaking as its empirical basis the Brazilian Legislative Survey (BLS) and the Latin American Elites project of the University of Salamanca (PELA-USAL), carried out with parliamentarians, the conference analyses the ideological polarization among Brazilian federal deputies in the period 2005-2021, presenting evidence that Brazilian parliamentarians have become more liberal on cultural issues and with more pro-market positions on economic issues, there is a greater differentiation between the parties, in relation to the location on the left/right axis, as we move away from 2005, without, however, signifying a polarized party system, coming closer to a picture of more differentiated parties in a non-polarized system.\nJulian Borba is a Full Professor in the Department of Sociology and Political Science and the Postgraduate Programme in Sociology and Political Science at the Federal University of Santa Catarina and coordinates the research project “Political divides in Brazil” (CNPq, IPEVESC Institute), being a visiting researcher at ISCTE between November 2023 and January 2024.\n
