SUMMARY:Political cleavages in Brazil
DESCRIPTION:Is it possible to talk about cleavages in a country whose electoral system allows for the existence of thirty political parties, with a long history of non-democratic regimes (Old Republic, Vargas Era and Military Dictatorship) and low party identification in public opinion? This is the starting question which Professor Julian Borba (UFSC – Brazil) will discuss in the doctoral debate cycle session of the PhD in Political Science at Iscte – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, on Monday 11 December 2023, at 6pm.\nBy questioning whether cleavages exist in Brazil, Julian Borba seeks to answer what their bases are and whether they connect voters and parties, based on the hypothesis that there are stable divisions in the electorate, especially around the liberal-fundamentalist dimension and that they are associated with both the demographic characteristics of voters and their party preferences.\nJulian Borba is a Full Professor in the Department of Sociology and Political Science and the Postgraduate Programme in Sociology and Political Science at the Federal University of Santa Catarina and coordinates the research project “Political divides in Brazil” (CNPq, IPEVESC Institute). He will be a visiting researcher at ISCTE between November 2023 and January 2024.\n \nDate and time:\nMonday 11 December 2023, at 6pm\nVenue: \nIscte – University Institute of Lisbon\n
